Jason Carter, the oldest of former President Jimmy Carter’s grandchildren, said in a recent interview that his grandfather is no longer awake every day.

Carter entered his hospice care in February 2023, but Jason Carter said that there’s “really been no change” in the former president’s condition in his interview with Southern Living Magazine on Friday.

Despite that quote from his grandson, the article goes on to say that Carter “isn’t awake every day” at this point in his care.

This is the first major development surrounding his health since Carter checked into hospice.

Even though the Carter family did not anticipate that Jimmy would experience a lengthy stay in care, Jason said that “God had other plans” when asked about the former president’s resilience.

“None of us really understand what it’s like for him right now,” Jason said, and Carter is simply “experiencing the world as best he can.”

At 99 years old, Carter has lived a longer life than any other U.S. president.
