Kyle Kirkwood made history Sunday, winning the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C., in the first major motor race ever held around the National Mall and some of the capital's most recognizable landmarks.

The Florida native guided his No. 27 Sam's Club Honda to a 3.0906-second victory over Christian Lundgaard's No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. Kirkwood's win highlighted a strong day for Andretti Global, which placed three drivers among the top four finishers.

The final margin did not reflect Kirkwood's dominance for much of the race. A late caution compressed the field and set up a restart on the seven-turn, 1.7-mile temporary street course, cutting deeply into a lead that had stretched beyond 15 seconds at points during the 147-lap, 250-mile event.
