Speaker Johnson invites President Biden to give State of the Union address on March 7
The speech will come just two days after Super Tuesday, the day that the largest number of states will hold their primaries and caucuses in the nominating process of the presidential candidates.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., on Saturday formally invited President Joe Biden to deliver the State of the Union address on March 7.
"It is my solemn duty to invite President Biden to address a Joint Session of Congress on March 7th to report on the state of our union," Johnson wrote on the social media platform, X, with a letter attached.
Biden is expected to give an overview of his administration’s policy achievements and priorities in this upcoming address, according to Politico.
In the 2023 State of the Union, Biden mostly focused on the U.S. recovering economically from the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine.
“In this moment of great challenge for our country, it is my solemn duty to extend this invitation … so that you may fulfill your obligation under the U.S. constitution to report on the state of our union,” Johnson's letter to Biden reads.
A rebuttal of the president's State of the Union is typically done by a Congressional member of the opposite party.
As of now, the GOP has not announced who that person will be. Last year it was GOP Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
The speech will come just two days after Super Tuesday, the day that the largest number of states will hold their primaries and caucuses in the nominating process of the presidential candidates.
