Trump establishes new Burgum-led national energy council
Burgum will be the chairman of the National Energy Council, while Energy Secretary Chris Wright will be vice-chair.
President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order that officially creates a new National Energy Council, which will be led by Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum.
Trump previously teased the council when nominating Burgum as Interior secretary last November. Trump said at the time that the council "will consist of all Departments and Agencies involved in the permitting, production, generation, distribution, regulation, transportation, of ALL forms of American Energy."
Energy Secretary Chris Wright is expected to be the council's vice-chair, according to The Hill.
Burgum claimed that the new council will reverse some of former President Joe Biden's policies, which he claimed were in opposition to unleashing energy.
“Now we need to turn that around 180 degrees and unleash that potential," he said. "We’ve got to unleash it from the Gulf of America all the way up to Alaska."
The council is also expected to be critical to Trump accomplishing his goal of American energy dominance and will play a key role in enacting his foreign policy objectives.
