Calif. university leaders fail to tell Rep. Mary Miller in House hearing whether men can have babies

The committee hearing questioned the chancellor of the University of California San Francisco Sam Hawgood, a doctor, and UCLA medical school dean, Steve Dubinett, on their school's curriculum.

Illinois GOP Rep. Mary Miller said Tuesday that two California university medical leaders failed to answer her most basic questions about whether biological men could have babies during a House hearing on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion's (DEI) impact in medical schools.

The Education and Workforce Committee hearing questioned the chancellor of the University of California San Francisco Sam Hawgood, a doctor, and University of California Los Angeles medical school dean, Steve Dubinett, on their school's curriculum.

Miller claimed that UCSF's Classroom Guide, titled "Framework for Gender and Sex Concepts in Teaching," advises students to use the term "pregnant people" instead of merely pregnant women.

"Who are pregnant people compared to pregnant women? Just curious," the lawmaker asked.

Hawgood defended the classroom guide as preparing students for "facing a wide diversity of patients" but said he had no personal issue with the term "pregnant women."

"Has a non-biological woman ever had a baby?" Miller asked, to which Hawgood responded that a "transgender person can," according to Fox News.

"That's not a biological woman. Has a non-biological woman ever had a baby?" She asked again, and Hawgood began to reiterate his stance on transgender people, but Miller interrupted that the response was "ridiculous."

Miller also questioned Dubinett on UCLA medical school's guidance for OB-GYN students not to assume a patient's gender identity, and that a disclaimer in a recent course said it uses the terms "she" and "women" but does not intend to exclude ‘those who have a uterus but do not identify with these terms."

"What does that even mean?" Miller asked. "Can someone have a uterus but not be a woman? Because it seems like your school is promoting that ridiculous idea?"

Dubinett just responded that the school is treating transgender patients in compliance with state and federal law.

"So, I'm going to ask you again, can someone have a uterus and not be a woman? Just say yes or no. Can they? That’s what your medical school is promoting," the lawmaker said as she was told that her time had expired. "Chairman, it's clear these medical schools are hiding DEI curriculum under the guise of medical access."

Miller slammed the two leaders after the hearing, telling Fox News that "medical schools that abandon scientific truth should lose their accreditation."

"It shouldn't take a medical degree to answer a basic biology question," she said. "This hearing exposed that our medical schools have become consumed by political ideology, that they're losing sight of reality. Patients want doctors grounded in common sense."

The exchanges were part of a broader House Education and Workforce Committee hearing that examined whether DEI policies at UCLA, UCSF and the University of Illinois contributed to antisemitism and influenced medical school curricula.
