U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro said Friday that her office is seeking the death penalty for the suspect in the fatal shooting of two Israeli Embassy staffers outside the Capital Jewish Museum last year.

Prosecutors have accused 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez, who is originally from Chicago, of allegedly killing Israeli embassy staffers Sarah Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky outside the museum last May.

Rodriguez has been charged with multiple federal charges, including hate and terrorism-related offenses, and some carry a maximum penalty of death or life imprisonment, according to the Washington Times.

“My message to anyone who seeks to commit political violence in this district: D.C. is not the place," Pirro said at a news conference. "You will be held accountable, and you will face the full wrath of the law."

In order to secure the death penalty, federal prosecutors must prove the suspect specifically targeted the couple because they were Jewish and Israeli. Prosecutors have argued Rodriguez was “motivated by political, ideological, national, and religious bias, contempt, and hatred," because he allegedly targeted people who were attending a Jewish event.

The suspect's next court date is scheduled for June 30, but no trial date has been announced.
