“I dissent a lot. I’m hoping that the court will take back some of the crazy things that it’s done,” Sotomayor says

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor said she hopes the high court eventually reverses its landmark decision granting former presidents broad protection from criminal prosecution for actions taken while in office.

Speaking Saturday during a public discussion on civic education at George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate in Virginia, Sotomayor criticized some of the court’s recent decisions and identified the 2024 presidential immunity ruling as one she would like to see overturned.

“I dissent a lot. I’m hoping that the court will take back some of the crazy things that it’s done,” Sotomayor told the audience, adding that she was “only joking — maybe not.”

"No, seriously. You know, I’ve spoken openly about this, there are some opinions that I hope in my lifetime will get overturned. The immunity case is one of them," she added.

She later made clear that she was serious about wanting the immunity decision reconsidered, saying it was among the court's opinions she hopes will be reversed during her lifetime.

The 2024 ruling in Trump v. United States was decided 6-3, with the conservative majority finding that former presidents have absolute immunity for certain core constitutional powers and at least presumptive immunity for other official acts. Conduct unrelated to official presidential responsibilities is not protected.
