U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials released a French migrant Friday who they claimed overstayed a 90-day visa, and she has since returned to France.
ICE detained 85-year-old Marie-Thérèse Ross on April 1 for overstaying her visa, but France called for her release Thursday citing concern about the woman's age. She was held in a federal detention center in Louisiana.
“The main thing is that she is back in France, and that is fully satisfying to us,” French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot told reporters, but added “there were acts of violence” that concerned the French government.
Ross moved to the United States in June and married Alabama resident and U.S. veteran William Ross in April of last year. The couple had met on a base in France in the 1950s and kept in touch, but the veteran died of natural causes in January.
The widow was arrested earlier this month amid a messy family dispute with her two stepsons regarding her late-husband's estate, according to the Associated Press.
She was also in the process of applying for her green card at the time of the arrest, her son told the outlet.
“She’s very tired, she’s not very good, but it’s difficult for her,” the son said. “We are very, very happy, but we are tired.”
