Immigrant advocates sue Trump admin to block ICE from hiding locations of some detainees
The lawsuit argues that the policy, which was adopted last month in order to expedite deportations, is "unlawful and inhumane," and makes it difficult or impossible for the attorneys representing the immigrants to locate their clients.
Groups that provide legal services to immigrants filed a lawsuit Wednesday hoping to stop a new policy from the Trump administration, which hides the locations of detainees with final deportation orders.
The lawsuit argues that the policy, which was adopted last month in order to expedite deportations, is "unlawful and inhumane," and makes it difficult or impossible for the attorneys representing the immigrants to locate their clients, the Associated Press reported.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reportedly removed the locations of illegal immigrants facing final removal orders from its Online Detainee Locator System, and the agency instructed staff not to reveal their whereabouts.
The Department of Homeland Security nor ICE have publicly confirmed the changes in policy, but the agencies have said they are prioritizing people with final removal orders for deportation.
As of last month, the policy change affected more than 16,000 of the nearly 69,000 detainees who were in ICE custody.
