Bessent said the U.S. will not lift the sanctions on Iran until the country hands over the uranium and commits to not working toward obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told reporters at the White House Thursday that he will not be granting any sanctions relief for Iran until it turns over its enriched uranium, which is used in nuclear programs.

The comment comes the same day sources said the U.S. and Iran have reached a tentative agreement to extend their ceasefire by 60-days and begin talks on the regime's nuclear program, though President Trump has not signed off on it.

Bessent, who filled in for White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt while she's on maternity leave, declined to confirm the extended ceasefire but said the U.S. will not lift the sanctions on Iran until the country hands over the uranium and commits to not working toward obtaining a nuclear weapon.

“Nothing is going to be on the table until we see the Strait of Hormuz open, and the Iranians agree that they have to turn over the highly enriched uranium, and that they can’t have a nuclear program,” Bessent said.

The secretary said the decision on the extended ceasefire is up to President Donald Trump and assured the public that the president would not make a deal that is bad for America.

“It’s always a mistake to get out ahead of the president, so it is all going to be the president’s decision,” he said. “We can see that the president very clearly stated his three [pre-requisites]: Open the Strait, highly enriched uranium, no nuclear program.”
