A Navy sailor pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to selling counterfeit oxycodone pills to other crew members aboard the San Diego-based USS Abraham Lincoln. 

The U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of California said Bailey Szramowski, 29, continued selling the fentanyl-laced pill even after one person who ingested one died, the Los Angeles Times reported. 

The man, who court documents identified by his initials, A.N., died of a fentanyl overdose on Jan. 3, 2023, while he was on leave and staying in a recreational vehicle in San Leandro, Calif. 

Ten days later, another sailor aboard the aircraft carrier was hospitalized for a drug overdose and had to be given Narcan, a drug that stops the effects of opioids. That man told investigators that Szramowski sold him three pills the day of his overdose and the defendant had been selling pills to sailors for about a year. 

The sailor who died reportedly was also selling the pills.
