The New York Fire Department confirmed Friday that one person was killed and dozens more were injured in a fire and explosion at a shipyard on New York City’s Staten Island.

Officials have not identified the fatality but described the person as a civilian and said 36 others were wounded with injuries ranging from mild to severe.

The update comes after two workers were spotted trapped in a confined space at the dock at about 3:30 p.m. Eastern and firefighters, who were attempting to rescue the workers, noted a fire burning in the basement of a metal structure at the dock, according to the Associated Press.

Fire crews were combatting the blaze when a major explosion rocked the site less than an hour later, Joanne Mariano with the fire department’s press office said, and emergency workers counted 16 people on site with injuries by 5 p.m. Eastern. The number of wounded expanded to dozens just a couple of hours later.

“This was a complex, fast-developing emergency situation,” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during a press conference Friday evening.

Most of the injured were firefighters and other emergency workers, according to fire officials.

The cause of the fire and explosion is still under investigation.
