Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell on Sunday night suspended his California gubernatorial campaign amid a furor over sex assault allegations and other alleged impropriety.

"To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past," Swalwell wrote in his X account.

"I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s," he added.

His decision came after numerous prominent Democrats urged him to drop from the race after the allegations surfaced.

Many of his endorsements were pulled back as well.
