Trump’s election run continues as Letlow wins GOP runoff for Louisiana Senate seat
Letlow won 45% of the vote in May’s primary, while Fleming came in second with 28%.
President Donald Trump's unprecedented election endorsement run continued Saturday night as Rep. Julia Letlow beat State Treasurer John Fleming in the GOP U.S. Senate runoff in Louisiana for a seat likely to stay in Republican hands in the fall.
Numerous media outlets, including The Associated Press, projected Letlow, an educator-turned-politician, would win the runoff.
Letlow has been in the House since 2021 when she won the seat that her husband, Luke, had secured but did not fill when he died from COVID-19 in late 2020.
She is poised to become Louisiana’s first female GOP senator if elected in the fall in the heavily Republican state.
Trump offered his congratulations late Saturday.
"Great News!!! Julia Letlow WON in Louisiana, beating conclusively a very strong and smart opponent. Congratulations to Julia. She will be a truly GREAT Senator!" he wrote on social media.
The contest required a runoff after no candidate secured 50% of the vote in last month's primary, where incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy finished third and was eliminated.
Cassidy had drawn Trump's ire by voting for his impeachment over the January 6 Capitol riot.
