Progressive activist William Lawrence was projected to defeat former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine and Slovakia Bridget Brink in the Democratic primary to represent Michigan 7th Congressional District.

The Associated Press called the race for Lawrence at 11:24 p.m. EST, with 55% of precincts reporting. As of press time, Lawrence led Brink, 43% to 29%.

The result marked one of the biggest wins for progressives of the night as Brink was a relative heavyweight of the foreign policy establishment during the Biden administration.

Lawrence, for his part, was backed by a number of far-left groups and appeared to ride the wave of progressive insurgencies against traditional Democrats that has rocked the party in recent months.

The district is centered on Lansing, and Lawrence will go on to face Rep. Tom Barrett, R-Mich., in what is expected to be one of the pivotal battles for control of the House.
