President Donald Trump on Tuesday offered to help the city of Chicago deal with its crime problem and questioned why state and local authorities had not sought assistance from Washington.

"Chicago is suffering an unprecedented and particularly violent crime wave that is getting worse by the day," Trump posted on Truth Social. "The Federal Government can extinguish it quickly and completely, but the Mayor of Chicago, or the Governor of Illinois, must ask for our help. What is wrong with them? Why aren’t they asking? TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!"

Trump has previously deployed the National Guard to Washington, D.C., to deal with the crime problem in the nation's capital. He later sent personnel to Memphis, Tenn., for the same purpose.

Earlier this year, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson called on Trump to help deal with violence in the city by building affordable homes and addressing the cost of living.

“If you are the big man and the big person that you claim to be, make those investments and I will put everything that I love on the fact that violence will go down across this country,” Johnson said in July.
