Federal agents raid Democratic Rep Ilhan Omar's DC residence: report
The search is reportedly related to a criminal fraud investigation into the Somali-born congresswoman's immigration paperwork.
Federal agents on Monday morning raided the Washington, D.C., home of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, according to a news report.
The Homeland Security Investigations raid was first reported by Fox News Digital, based on what the news outlet said was at least one source familiar with the matter.
Multiple federal agents with HSI jackets were seen outside Omar's home in the early hours of Monday, in a video included with the story.
“This raid by Trump’s DHS is an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies. For a decade, Donald Trump has relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Ilhan Omar with inflammatory rhetoric, repeatedly putting a target on her back," Jacklyn Rogers, Omar's Communications Director, told Just the News in a statement.
"Now, those attacks have escalated to a pointless federal raid. The Congresswoman has done nothing wrong. No president should be able to use the power of the federal government to intimidate his political enemies," she added.
Two sources close to the investigation say the search is related to a criminal fraud investigation into the Somali-born congresswoman's immigration paperwork, which was filled out by her late father when she was a child, Fox also reports.
Homeland Security Investigations, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, “executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice,” an agency spokesperson said in a statement Monday. “This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.”
White House border czar Tom Homan said last month that DHS is investigating the congresswoman.
Omar fled Somalia’s civil war with her family when she was eight years old and stayed in a Kenyan refugee camp for four years before moving to the U.S.
