Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed Thursday that War Secretary Pete Hegseth is aligned with President Donald Trump on the decision to cancel the planned livestream of the execution of Nidal Hasan, who fatally shot 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009.

Hegseth previously announced that Trump had approved Hasan's execution by firing squad and that the event would be streamed for the public to see, prompting backlash from people on both sides of the political aisle.

Trump announced the decision to cancel the livestream on Wednesday, stating that although it could have served as a "strong deterrent for the World to witness how America deals with terrorists," the execution can still be viewed in person by some.

"That said, the execution may be viewed in person by the immediate families of the victims, if they so choose. They deserve to witness JUSTICE!" Trump said.

Parnell told The Hill that Trump and Hegseth “spoke about the decision” ahead of the Truth Social announcement, and that the secretary “supports the President’s decision, and they are completely aligned.”
