The yet-to-be-identified bystander wounded in a deadly shootout between Secret Service agents and a lone gunman Saturday at a White House security checkpoint remains as of Memorial Day in serious-but-stable condition. 

The incident occurred at about 5 p.m. at the Pennsylvania Avenue and 17th Street NW checkpoint. What sounded like dozens of shots rang out during the exchange, based on social media posts. 

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best, of Dundalk, Maryland, was fatally shot, but no law enforcement officers were wounded or injured. 

The exchange of gunfire occurred when Best started shooting toward the checkpoint. 

“Our thoughts are also with the innocent bystander who was wounded during this incident,” said Secret Service Director Sean Curran. “The Secret Service is hopeful he will make a full recovery.”
