A reported shooting at Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia, has been "contained," the Augusta County Sheriff's office said. 

Wayneboro Public Schools said in a Facebook post that a lockdown that was imposed on the school has been lifted, and all students, staff and teachers are safe. 

"Parents wishing to pickup students can now access the school. The reunification process of the Westwood students and families has been our priority. We appreciate your cooperation, understanding and patience through this process. All students from Westwood have been released to their parents and guardians at this time," the school said. 

Law enforcement remains stationed at all the district locations, Wayneboro Public Schools said, "out of an abundance of caution." 

No further details have emerged about the incident, but multiple reports say that one adult was injured. 

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger said in a post on X that she's monitoring an "emergency" at the school. 

"My heart is with these young students, their parents and families, and the teachers and staff at the school. Thank you to the first responders who are assisting at the scene," Spanberger said.
