Suspect in shooting of officer found dead after exchange of gunfire with police

Officers were fired upon after responding to a report of a man who'd fired upon family members.

A man suspected of shooting a police officer was found dead Sunday after exchanging gunfire with police. 

On Saturday afternoon, police responded to a report of a man who fired a gun at family members. The officers went to a residence in New Hampshire and were fired upon. 

One officer was struck by a bullet that caused non-fatal injuries, according to a news release by the New Hampshire attorney general's office. 

The man suspected of firing on officers fled the scene. Nearby residents were ordered to shelter in place, while officers made contact with the suspect in a wooded area late Saturday. They attempted to take the man into custody. 

After an exchange of gunfire with police, Matthew J. Masse, 38, was found dead.
