Two days after Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, sounded the alarm about the online gaming platform Roblox promoting mass violence, an alleged mass murder plot targeting Jews in Houston was foiled with two teenagers arrested, including a Roblox player.

On Monday, Burrows posted screenshots of a user-generated Roblox video game simulation that appears to depict Lego-style figurines with AR-15-type rifles walking through a hallway and into a classroom entitled, 'Active Shooter Studio’s Roblox game, ‘Robb.’”

The Roblox video game, which has since been removed, appeared to simulate “the tragedy at Robb Elementary in graphic detail,” making it clear that “this content – and the failure to stop it – demands immediate action,” Burrows said. “Turning an unspeakable act of violence, whose scars remain across the Uvalde community, into entertainment is a profound moral failure. When directed at children, it goes beyond poor taste and crosses into dangerous territory. It reflects a platform that permits exploitation and shock value at the expense of basic human decency – risking further harm and the erosion of moral judgment at an impressionable age.”

He also directed a House committee to investigate online gaming platforms promoting violence and assess what legislative action can be taken, The Center Square reported.

Burrows said he could not have known that just two days later an alleged mass shooting and terrorist attack planned against a Houston synagogue and day school would be foiled or that one of the alleged perpetrators was an avid player of Roblox video games glorifying violence.

“Just days after directing the House Committee on State Affairs to examine the impact of violent games and virtual experiences on minors, the foiled mass-casualty plot targeting a Houston synagogue serves as a stark reminder of what’s at stake,” Burrows told The Center Square in an exclusive interview. “Incidents like this reinforce the urgent need for closer scrutiny of the digital environments our children are exposed to on widely used platforms like Roblox. If Roblox were a person, they would already be in prison.”

On Wednesday, a multistate investigation involving the FBI in North Carolina and Texas was launched resulting in the state’s oldest congregation going on lockdown in Houston. Within 24 hours, two arrests were made in two states over an alleged plot to “kill as many Jews as possible,” The Center Square reported.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office in Lexington, North Carolina, charged 18-year-old Angelina Hicks with felony conspiracy to commit assault with a deadly weapon to kill or commit serious injury and felony conspiracy to commit murder. The judge set bond at $10 million.

The sheriff’s office said they found evidence “showing Hicks and co-conspirators were planning a mass casualty event at a synagogue in Houston. The planned attack was targeted at the Congregation Beth Israel.”

The Reform Jewish congregation serves more than 1,500 households in the Houston area and is the oldest Jewish congregation in Texas. The Shlenker School, a day school for children, is also located on its property.

Hicks’ father, Dannie Hicks, told WFMY News 2 in North Carolina that Angelina was playing a fantasy game on Roblox. Of the online platform simulating mass shootings and violence, he said, "It's a fantasy game. That's the way she looked at it — as a fantasy game online.”

Dannie Hicks also blamed law enforcement for ruining “her whole life and ours over this" and said she wasn’t capable of committing mass violence.

Burrows, a father of three young boys who chaired a state legislative investigative committee assessing failures related to the Robb Elementary School shooting, is taking the threat more seriously.

He told The Center Square he was grateful law enforcement intervened to stop the alleged planned attack in Houston “but we cannot ignore the risks these platforms pose to young users.”

State legislative hearings are forthcoming into Roblox and online gaming platforms glorifying violence, he said.

Roblox is one of the most popular online gaming platforms worldwide. The $2 billion company has 144 million daily users. According to Roblox data, “its user base is younger than indicated by self-reported data. Among daily users, 38% are between the ages of 13 and 17, 35% are under the age of 13 and 27% are over 18,” CNBC reported. Roblox says “it views its scale with young users as a ‘valuable strategic asset,’” CNBC added.
