Democratic Senate candidate Scott Colom is clinging to a small lead in normally ruby-red Mississippi as he looks to oust Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss., in what has thus far been a blue wave midterm cycle.

As of press time, Colom boasted 48.9% of the vote and led Hyde-Smith by a mere 43 votes, with 96% of precincts reporting.

The race is almost certainly headed for a recount. But even if Hyde-Smith manages to hold the seat, the competitive contest still marks a stinging rebuke to Republicans, who have consistently won at the state level for decades.

Across the country, Democratic candidates have claimed victories in every competitive Senate contest where the Associated Press has made a race call.

Alaska remains the only other state with an as-yet-uncalled contest.
