House Democrat leader Hakeem Jeffries met with President Donald Trump's adviser Jared Kushner for a private discussion that may have been a preparation for a Democrat-controlled House following the midterm elections in November. 

The conversation was described as covering a broad range of topics in which Kushner and Jeffries sought potential areas of common ground, the New York Times reported. Jeffries, a New York Democrat, is in line to be House speaker, the leader of the entire chamber, if Democrats win the majority in November. 

Jeffries confirmed the meeting, which was reportedly held in New York City. But the date of the meeting remains unclear.  

The pair discussed housing, immigration and affordability as areas where they could potentially work together, according to the Times' sources, and Kushner suggested that Jeffries should meet with White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles.

Jeffries said the only way the Democrats and the Trump administration would come to agreements on issues would be if Republicans were willing to give ground to Democrats on cost-of-living issues, which is the Republican's top priority.
