6 injured during 'senior skip day' beach shooting in South Carolina
The department has also recovered multiple firearms after shutting down the beach following the shooting.
At least six people on a South Carolina beach were injured during a shooting Friday afternoon around 5:20 p.m.
Isle of Palms Police Chief Kevin Cornett confirmed that five of the six people injured were high school students who were participating in a "senior skip day," and one older, female beachgoer was also shot. None of the injuries were considered life threatening, though several were taken to the hospital in ambulances. The coastal city is about 15 miles east of Charleston, S.C.
"A large crowd of individuals that apparently were part of a group from senior skip day had gathered on the beach," Cornett said at a press conference, according to ABC. "There were a couple of altercations that took place and during one of those altercations, there were several shots that were fired."
Cornett has said they have several suspects in custody, but are unclear if the actual shooter was detained. The department also recovered multiple firearms after shutting down the beach following the shooting.
"We have weapons recovered, but we cannot say that they were the weapons involved in the incident," Cornett stated.
South Carolina GOP Sen. Tim Scott commented on the incident, calling it "heart-wrenching."
"It is heart-wrenching to hear of this senseless act of violence, especially so close to home," Scott wrote on Twitter. "Thank you to the first responders and law enforcement officers for their rapid response and brave service."
