7 Michigan State football players charged following tunnel brawl

Seven Michigan State football players were charged with assault in the aftermath of a fight with University of Michigan players following their game on Oct. 29, according to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

The incident occurred in a tunnel after Michigan’s 29-7 win over Michigan State.

OThe prosecutor's office announced Wednesday that defensive back Khary Crump was charged with one count of felonious assault, which is a felony. Each of the other 6 players were charged with misdemeanors — 5 changed with aggregated assault and the other charged with assault and battery.

According to Michigan law, aggravated assault is punishable by "imprisonment for not more than 1 year or a fine of not more than $1,000.00, or both." Felonious assault is punishable with up to 4 years in prison or a fine of not more than $2,000.00 or both.

"All charges are merely allegations," the prosecutor's office said in a press release. "Those charged are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.”

Michigan State University Interim President Teresa K. Woodruff responded to the charges in a formal statement.

"The university and our athletic department will continue to evaluate this matter and cooperate with any investigative reviews," Woodruff said. "While we do not condone the actions taken by some football players on Oct. 29, we will support our student-athletes through this process. They are students first, and their academic journey continues. MSU believes strongly in restorative justice practices and the education around harmful actions."
