A federal grand jury has indicted an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer on charges of making false statements about a nonfatal shooting in Minnesota last winter. 

Prosecutors allege that ICE officer Christian Castro, who was previously charged in state court, shot and wounded Julio C. Sosa-Celis, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela. Sosa-Celis' shooting was followed by hours of protests and vandalism. 

Criminal charges against Sosa-Celis were dropped, and Castro was suspended. Video footage emerged that contradicted key aspects of the initial federal account. 

The indictment against Castro was filed under seal, and officials are expected to make it public once he's in custody, the New York Times reported, citing unnamed sources. 

The Trump administration initially came to Castro's defense, but in the weeks that have followed, federal officials have distanced themselves from him.
