Federal prosecutors have opened an excessive force investigation into the police shooting death of a Trump-supporting Air Force veteran during last week’s Capitol riots as well as a homicide probe into the the bludgeoning death of an officer during the violence.

US Attorney Michael Sherwin in Washington DC confirmed to CBS News his civil right division office has opened an investigation into the fatal shooting of Ashli Babbitt by Capitol Police as she climbed through a window inside the Capitol last Wednesday.

Excessive force investigations are common anytime an officer-involved shooting leads to a death.

Sherwin also confirmed his office is working with the Metropolitan Police Department to investigate the homicide of Capitol Police officer Brian D. Sicknick, who was bludgeoned to death with a fire extinguisher by the violent protesters.
