George Santos appears in court while engaging in potential plea deal talks
The parties hope to continue plea deal negotiations over the next 30 days, prosecutors said.
Former New York Republican Rep. George Santos is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday while he is in talks with federal prosecutors about entering a potential plea deal, court records show.
Santos has a status conference with federal prosecutors scheduled for Tuesday in central Long Island, according to a court document published Monday by CNN.
Prosecutors asked for the court to schedule the next status conference in 30 days.
"The parties are presently engaged in plea negotiations with the goal of resolving this matter without the need for a trial. The parties wish to continue those negotiations over the next thirty days," prosecutors wrote in the court filing.
The court set a trial date for Santos in September 2024, but the government asked the court to schedule the trial for May or June 2024 if the matter ultimately proceeds to that point.
Santos was indicted on 23 federal charges, to which he pleaded not guilty in October. Santos was expelled from Congress earlier this month, making him the first member to be ousted by the House without a criminal conviction.
