GOP Rep. Donalds tears into Harris crime agenda: 'A recipe for disaster'
"You might as well just pull out some construction paper and draw a picture of what you might think you want to do. But that's not a plan for success," he went on.
Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., on Tuesday excoriated Democratic efforts to reshape policing in the United States, insisting that Party calls to "reimagine" policing amounted to an admission of a lack of viable policy ideas.
Donalds made the remarks in a press conference from Trump Tower in Chicago, Ill., amid the Democratic National Convention.
"The Democrats do not have a recipe of success for keeping people safe in our communities," he said. "As was already stated, Kamala Harris is famously on the record saying that she wants to reimagine policing and public safety. Well, what does that mean? Reimagining means nothing."
"You might as well just pull out some construction paper and draw a picture of what you might think you want to do. But that's not a plan for success," he went on. "She has said -- as she praised the defund the police movement -- she praised it, saying that it was the right movement for our country."
"She has she has stated repeatedly that the US needs to reimagine, reimagine law enforcement, arguing for less police in the streets and redirecting funding from law enforcement to other services," he continued. "We have seen the results of the defund the police movement. It has been a recipe for disaster."
Donalds' event was part of Republican counterprogramming for the day, which centered on crime and safety. Former President Donald Trump and GOP vice presidential nominee JD Vance are both slated to hold separate events on the topic later on Tuesday.
