Ten killed, 62 wounded in July Fourth weekend shootings in Chicago

At least 10 people died after being shot and another 62 were wounded in Chicago over the Fourth of July weekend, according to news reports. 

Twelve of the wounded were shot during three separate attacks in the city's west and South sides. Four were shot Friday evening in West Garfield Park, five early Monday in Parkway Gardens and three in Woodlawn early Tuesday, as firework displays and other July Fourth activities Monday night came to close.

One man was shot six times and killed while riding his bike at about 4 p.m. on Saturday. The man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. No arrests have yet been made.

A 5-year-old boy was hit in the right shoulder while in his backyard Monday evening by a bullet that apparently was fired into the sky. He was listed in good condition, and no arrests have been made in the case, too.

A 10-year-old boy was shot while sitting in his bedroom Sunday night. Bullets were shot through the side of his home in Englewood past 10:30 p.m., according to investigators. The boy was taken to the Chicago Comers Children's Hospital in good condition.

A 90-year-old man was taken to the hospital in critical condition after being shot in the abdomen Saturday morning in North Lawndale.

The 2022 holiday toll is lower than last year, when 19 people were killed and more than 100 were shot over the long weekend. In 2020, 79 people were shot and 15 of them died.
