A man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly broke into the Colorado Supreme Court offices, held a security guard at gunpoint and opened fire, officials said.

The Colorado State Patrol said a two-vehicle crash occurred shortly after 1 a.m. local time Tuesday, and a man then shot out a window of the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center in Denver, according to a local CBS News affiliate.

The man then entered the building and came into contact with an unarmed Colorado State Patrol Capitol Security officer, whom the man held at gunpoint as he demanded access to the rest of the building.

The individual obtained the guard's keys and walked toward other parts of the building before Denver Police Department officers and Colorado State Patrol Troopers responded, officials said.

The suspect went to the 7th floor and fired additional shots inside the building before he called 911 around 3 a.m. and surrendered voluntarily to authorities.

Officials arrested him without incident and there were no injuries to the suspect, law enforcement or the building's occupants, the state patrol said. The suspect was not publicly identified and was transported to the hospital.

Officials do not believe the incident is associated with other threats to the Colorado Supreme Court Justices, per the state patrol.

The break-in occurred two weeks after the state high court ruled that former President Donald Trump could be removed from the 2024 presidential election ballot. The decision is headed to the U.S. Supreme Court after Trump appealed it.

The Colorado justices have faced threats following their decision regarding the former president.

"There is significant and extensive damage to the building and the investigation is ongoing," the Colorado State Patrol also said.
