New Mexico police officer fatally shot by a driver he attempted to help: report
As of now the suspect has not been found, but the police chief encouraged him to turn himself in.
A police officer from New Mexico was shot and killed Friday after he tried to help the driver of a disabled vehicle, according to authorities.
The police officer was Justin Hare, 40, and an arrest warrant has been issued for Jaremy Smith, 32, who reportedly shot him.
“On a cold, dark and windy morning, he offered help to a person he thought was in need,” State Police Chief Troy Weisler said Saturday during a news conference, according to CNN. “That person killed him in cold blood. The last words Officer Hare uttered on this earth was to offer help to a man who was about to kill him.”
As of now Smith has not been found, but the police chief encouraged him to turn himself in.
“Jeramy Smith, we are coming for you," Chief Weisler said. "I implore you to turn yourself in and surrender peacefully.”
The chief said that Hare parked behind Smith's vehicle on Friday around 5 a.m. local time and approached the passenger side of the car where they had a brief conversation about repairing his tire. Without a warning, Smith reportedly pulled out a gun and shot Hare.
The disabled vehicle was a white BMW belonging to a first responder in South Carolina who was found dead Friday evening, according to authorities.
Hare is survived by his two children, a girlfriend and his parents.
