A 15-year-old student was shot and killed on Friday during an altercation in a boy's bathroom at a high school in Joppa, Maryland, law enforcement officials announced, and the suspected shooter is in custody.

The shooting comes two days after four people were fatally shot at a high school in Georgia, and nine others were injured. The 14-year-old suspect Colt Gray and his father have been arrested and charged in the Georgia case.

Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler said 15-year-old Warren Curtis Grant was removed from the bathroom by other students, and attended by the school's nurse and principal before he was airlifted to a trauma center. However, he died at the hospital, ABC News reported.

A motive in the shooting has not been released so far, and the gun that was fired has not been recovered. It is also not clear what Grant and the 16-year-old alleged shooter were fighting about, Gahler said. But the suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed so far, was apprehended "within minutes" thanks to the help of community members.

"We're just devastated to be a part of this awful group of schools that have experienced things like this," Harford County Public Schools Superintendent Sean Bulson said during a news conference. "And we're going to do everything we can, working with this community, to make sure this absolutely never happens again."

The suspect has spoken to the sheriff's department at least 10 times since 2022 as either a victim, witness, or suspect, Gahler said.
