Two New Jersey borough council members have been shot dead within a week in separate incidents, the most recent Wednesday in Somerset County.

Russell Heller, a member of the Milford Borough council, was killed in an apparent murder-suicide exactly one week after Eunice Dwumfour, a member of the Sayreville Borough Council, was shot dead in her car, according to police.

Police responded to the fatal shooting Wednesday at about 7 a.m. at the utility company PSE&G Somerset Central Division Headquarters, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office.

The 51-year-old Heller, a senior distribution supervisor for the company, was pronounced deceased on the scene from a gunshot wound, officials said.

Former PSE&G employee Gary Curtis, 58, has been identified as a suspect. When police tracked down his vehicle Wednesday at about 10:20 p.m., they found him dead inside from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said.

"Preliminary investigation has revealed that the shooting was an isolated incident and Mr. Heller was the intended target," the prosecutor's office said.

The incident comes exactly one week after the 30-year-old Dwumfour, a Sayreville borough councilwoman, died after being shot multiple times in her car, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.

Dwumfour and Heller are Republicans, according to NJ.com.

No arrests have been made in Dwumfour’s killing.
