Tallahassee woman charged for alleged assault on GOP Rep. Gaetz
"I will never allow the safety of Northwest Floridians to be compromised," Gaetz said.
Florida authorities have charged a Tallahassee woman in connection with a Saturday altercation during which she allegedly assaulted Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz during a private event.
Selena J. Chambers, 41, faces one count of battery on an elected official and one count of battery, to touch or strike, according to a press release from Gaetz.
Walton County authorities arrested and charged Chambers after the incident in Sandestin, Fla.
The Florida lawmaker described Chambers as a "registered Democrat and self-described member of the 'Resistance,'" referencing a common designation for opponents of former President Donald Trump and his political agenda.
Gaetz indicated he would pursue charges in connection with the event, asserting that his decision was motivated by the need to uphold standards of civil conduct and preserve the safety of Floridians.
"I will never allow the safety of Northwest Floridians to be compromised. I will be pressing charges against this individual in order to uphold the civility our community deserves. Thank you to the Walton County Sheriff’s office for taking swift action," he said.
News of the charges against the Florida lawmaker's alleged assailant comes as he introduces a bipartisan plan to bar stocking trading for members of Congress, their spouses, and their dependents. Gaetz joined forces with New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on that effort.
