Watch: Criminal attacks Las Vegas judge at sentencing hearing after denied probation
County records show the suspect faces 14 charges related to the incident.
A man attacked a Las Vegas judge Wednesday after she denied him probation, an incident captured on what has become a viral video and that injured the judge and a court official.
The video at the sentencing hearing shows the moment the man leaped over the bench and onto the judge.
The man, Deobra Redden, 30, was before Clark County Judge Mary Kay Holthus after he pleaded guilty in November to attempted battery with substantial bodily harm, according to multiple news reports.
Redden's attorney had asked the judge to sentence him to probation and said that his mental health problems were responsible for his criminal history.
According to court records, Redden received multiple charges between 2015 and 2023 on counts such as battery, attempted theft, malicious destruction of property, and more.
"I appreciate that, but I think it’s time he gets a taste of something else. I just can’t with that history," Holthus said.
"In accordance with the laws in the state of Nevada," she said before being cut off as profanity can be heard in the video before Redden jumped over the bench onto Holthus, toppling the flags by her to the ground as her law clerk tried to pull him off.
Seconds later, a marshal came to help followed by other law enforcement officials as an alarm went off, according to the video.
An officer helped Holthus up and escorted her out of the room about four minutes after video showed Redden jumped on her.
The 62-year-old Holthus "experienced some injuries" and is "being monitored," and a court marshal sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital, district court spokeswoman Mary Ann Price said.
Without identifying anyone involved in the incident, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said officials were investigating a battery resulting in two victims being taken to the hospital. They also said the suspect is in custody.
County records show Redden faces 14 charges related to the incident, including seven charges of battery on a protected person.
