Algeria boxer at center of gender-qualification controversy will compete in Olympic gold round

Welterweight Imane Khelfi will will faces Yang Liu of China.

The Algeria Olympic boxer competing in the women's division and at the center of a gender issue will compete Friday for a gold medal.

The welterweight boxer, Imane Khelfi, advanced to the gold-medal round in the Paris Olympics with a victory Monday night over Thailand's Janjaem Suwannapheng. She will face Yang Liu of China in the final round. 

The controversy stems from the Olympic-banished International Boxing Association’s decision to disqualify Khelfi and fellow Paris medalist Lin Yu-ting of Chinese Taipei from the world championships last year for allegedly failing an eligibility test, according to the Associated Press.
