The Grammy-nominated singer Bonnie Tyler, best known for the song "Total Eclipse of the Heart," died this week in Portugal, her family said in a statement posted on social media on Thursday.

The singer died unexpectedly at the age of 75-years-old while being treated for an undisclosed illness at a hospital in Portugal.

“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” her family said.

The singer's death comes after she was hospitalized in May for emergency intestinal surgery. She was later placed in an induced coma, but was improving and expected to make a good recovery, according to the Associated Press. 

Tyler is also known for the songs "Holding out for a Hero," from the movie "Footloose" and “Here She Comes” from the movie “Metropolis," both in 1984.

She is survived by husband Robert Sullivan, whom she married in 1973.
