Indianapolis Colts owner and CEO Jim Irsay, who has led the team since 1997, died Wednesday at the age of 65, the NFL team confirmed in a statement.

The cause of death for the Indiana football titan was not immediately clear, but he died peacefully in his sleep, the team said. 

"Jim's dedication and passion for the Indianapolis Colts in addition to his generosity, commitment to the community, and most importantly, his love for his family were unsurpassed," the team said.

Irsay, who took over as CEO from his father Robert Irsay, saw the Colts win the Super Bowl during his tenure. The Colts defeated the Chicago Bears for the title in 2007. 

Irsay is survived by his daughters Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt and Kalen Jackson, his ex-wife Meg Coyle, and 10 grandchildren, per ESPN.
