John Sterling, who was the recognized voice of the New York Yankees before he retired in 2024, died Monday. He was 87. 

Sterling underwent heart bypass surgery last winter, ESPN reported, and was recovering at his home in Edgewater, New Jersey. 

Sterling had broadcast over 5,000 consecutive games from September 1989 through July 2019. He retired in April 2024, but he came out of retirement to call Yankee games during the 2024 postseason.
