Jon Gruden resigns as coach of NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders after email controversy

Jon Gruden resigned Monday as head coach of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders after reports about controversial language he reportedly used in emails while an ESPN analyst.

The Super Bowl-winning coach issued a statement through the Raiders announcing his departure. His team was 3-2 over the season’s first five games.

"I love the Raiders and do not want to be a distraction. Thank you to all the players, coaches, staff, and fans of Raider Nation. I'm sorry, I never meant to hurt anyone," he said 

Rich Bisaccia, the Raiders’ special teams coordinator, was elevated to interim head coach, the team said.

Gruden fell into an unfavorable spotlight last week when emails surfaced with allegedly racist comments he wrote.

But his resignation came after the New York Times reported earlier Monday the NFL as part of a workplace misconduct investigation “found that Gruden had casually and frequently unleashed misogynistic and homophobic language over several years to denigrate people around the game and to mock some of the league’s momentous changes.”
