The Oakland Police Department on Friday announced that the legendary Oakland college football coach John Beam has died from a gunshot wound.

The confirmation of Beam's death comes shortly after a suspect in the shooting, which took place on Thursday at the field house on campus, was identified as 27-year-old Cedric Irving Jr. The suspect was arrested Friday.

Beam was initially taken to a hospital in critical condition, but Oakland Police Chief Floyd Mitchell confirmed the coach died Friday morning.

"Coach Beam passed away this morning from the gunshot wound that he sustained yesterday," Mitchell said, per NBC News. "I know that coach Beam meant a lot to the Oakland community and beyond."

Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee said in a statement on Thursday, "Coach Beam is a giant in Oakland -- a mentor, an educator, and a lifeline for thousands of young people. We are praying for him."

Beam worked as the athletic director at Laney College, which is a public community college and part of the four-campus Peralta Community College District.

"At approximately noon, a senior member of our athletic staff was shot on campus in the Laney Field House. The individual was immediately transported to a local hospital, and we are keeping them-and their loved ones-in our hearts during this incredibly difficult time. Out of respect for their privacy, we are not releasing their name at this moment," the district said in a statement after the shooting.

Acting Oakland Police Chief James Beere said at a press conference on Thursday that shots fired were first reported just before noon.

Police initially responded to the incident as if there was an active shooter, but then determined there was not.

The college was placed on lockdown earlier in the day, but it was lifted at 1:15 p.m. The campus was closed for the rest of the day on Thursday, but school officials said it would be open on Friday.

In 2020, the college's football program was featured on the Netflix series "Last Chance U." At the time, Beam was the head coach.
