More than 3 million Americans filed for unemployment last week, report
The continuing claims number is also nearing 20 million
An estimated 3.1 million Americans filed for first-time unemployment claims last week, the Labor Department reported Thursday.
The report show roughly 20 million Americans were unemployed in April, slightly less than the projected 21.5 million, amid the coronavirus the has shuttered much of the U.S. economy.
Since March 30, when the country essentially shutdown as a result of the virus, roughly 33.5 million American workers have filed for unemployment claims.
The reports show the devastating impact that the coronavirus has had on the U.S. economy, in which all but non-essential sectors have been forced to close.
The numbers also show that roughly one in five Americans employed in February is now out of work.
The jobless claims and unemployment rate, which is projected to hit 16%, are reaching Depression-era levels.
