American drivers will pay about $704 more this year at the gas pumps than they did last year, according to the website Gasoline Misery Index.
The cost of gasoline had been rising for months but skyrocketed in late February, when Russia invaded Ukraine and disrupted the global energy market.
On Friday, the national average price per gallon of gas was around $4.28 — an 84% jump from the start of last year, when the price of gas per gallon was $2.33.
