Boeing to cut 17,000 jobs over the coming months, reducing workforce by 10%
The workforce reduction is expected to equal a loss of 17,000 jobs, based on the company's workforce numbers last December. Other changes include delaying the 777X program until 2026, and ending the 767 freighter program in 2027.
Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg announced major changes to the company in a memo on Friday, which will take place in the coming months, including reducing their total workforce by 10%.
The announcements come after Boeing employees agreed to strike last month after rejecting a proposed contract, and after the company faced backlash over a series of safety issues and mechanical errors this year.
The workforce reduction is expected to equal a loss of 17,000 jobs, based on the company's workforce numbers last December, ABC News reported.
"Our business is in a difficult position, and it is hard to overstate the challenges we face together," said Ortberg. "Beyond navigating our current environment, restoring our company requires tough decisions and we will have to make structural changes to ensure we can stay competitive and deliver for our customers over the long term."
Other changes include delaying the 777X program until 2026, and ending the 767 freighter program in 2027.
