Dow closes 600 points down as stocks end April with major gains
Benchmark indexes are closing out the month of April with significant gains
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday with a 600 point loss. The S&P 500 was down 3%.
The markets are responding to unsatisfactory quarterly earnings reports from stock giants including Amazon and Apple.
Notably, shares of Tesla plummeted on Friday after CEO Elon Musk tweeted that he felt the company's shared were priced "too high." Musk has been reprimanded before by the SEC for interfering with his company's stocks via twitter. He had previously agreed to allow his public statements to be vetted before posting.
April posted some significant market gains after the initial market downturn in March. The Dow rose 11%, the S&P 500 finished 12.7% up, and the Nasdaq Composite ended the month 15.5% higher than it started. The rise in key indexes is largely the result of investors' hopes of reopening the economy in the near future.
