Much of U.S. braces for winter storm over Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend

Many states across the U.S. are bracing for another winter storm over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, with heavy to moderate snow along with high winds being projected throughout the Midwest and into the Southeast and New England.

The National Weather Service Prediction Center had already forecast on Thursday that a "fast moving winter storm" was expected to bring "a swath of heavy snowfall from North Dakota into northern Missouri," one that could see snowfall rates of up to one inch per hour. 

Rain and freezing rain were also expected for states as far south as the Carolinas on Saturday and into Sunday. That system was expected to move north with more rain and heavy wind. 

Monday is projected to see rain and snow along the I-95 corridor, coming roughly two weeks after a major snowstorm shut down dozens of miles of that interstate in Virginia and left drivers stranded for more than a day.
