The Episcopalian bishop who called on President Donald Trump to "have mercy" on illegal aliens and transgender youth said that she would not apologize for the remarks.

Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde's new comments on the incident came after the president on Wednesday asked the cleric to apologize for her remarks, which were delivered at a national prayer service for the inauguration where Trump and his family were present.

“I am not going to apologize for asking for mercy for others,” Budde told Time Magazine

At the Service of Prayer for the Nation, which was held at the Washington National Cathedral, Budde asked Trump "to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared."

She added, "There are gay, lesbian, transgender children, Democratic, Republican, independent families – some who fear for their lives."

Trump criticized the sermon and accused the bishop of politicizing her church in a post to social media.

“The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way," Trump wrote on TRUTH Social. "She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart."

He continued, “She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology!”

In response to the president, Budde told Time Magazine that she does not "hate President Trump."

"I strive not to hate anyone, and I dare say that I am not of the ‘radical left’ either, whatever that means. That is not who I am," she said.
