Evacuations ahead of fast-moving San Bernardino fire
The fire doubled in size in less than a day, leading the governor to declare a state of emergency
California officials began ordering mandatory evacuations this weekend in San Bernardino County due to an uncontrolled wildfire affecting the mountain communities of Running Springs and Arrowbear Lake.
Five hundred firefighters used hoses, hand lines, and fixed-wing aircraft to fight the fire, which started Thursday night and rapidly grew overnight, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The fire nearly doubled in size from 3,800 acres early Saturday to 7,122 acres by the evening. Authorities report the fire is 0% contained, in part because steep terrain has impeded firefighter access.
Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in San Bernardino County Saturday night and announced the state is receiving federal funds to combat the fire.
"I thank President Biden for his swift approval of support for the work of our firefighters and first responders battling this fire and protecting local communities," Newsom said. "It's critical that residents in the impacted areas remain vigilant and prepare to evacuate immediately if called for by local authorities."
The National Weather Service Los Angeles said the weather is exacerbating the fire, creating a "dangerous situation."
